This was a fun weekend for Comedy Characters on the University of Denver campus.
I was approached earlier in the week by the team at NBC in their search for comedy sketch writers and performers that might be a fit for an upcoming project. A message like this isn’t just music to my ears, it’s a New York Philharmonic Symphony (or Billy Joel at Madison Square Garden) sort of experience.
Denver has a GREAT community of comedy writers, improvisers, actors, and stand up comedians. What we don’t always have enough are opportunities to show off our stuff. So when opportunity knocks you have got to open that door. And eat a breath mint first.
In this case I think I was more excited to share the news with my recent class of DU comedy writing students, many of whom are Theatre majors now acting in plays or planning their big moves to cities like New York. I did a quick post on the Urban Brain Comedy Facebook Group (where I post opportunities for previous students and those who want to be involved with projects) and put together a film shoot on Saturday. Those who wanted to throw their hat in the ring worked on creating characters and brought their A game along with costumes for a fun day of comedy play.
I’m a student of Second City, so my philosophy on characters is built on the fundaments of having…
- A strong Point of View
Which was what I saw in many of the characters that took life on Saturday! It was also a great chance for me to test out some of the new film equipment I purchased for the next Urban Brain® projects taking place this fall. So it was a fun way to help out others and pay it forward to others in our comedy community who share the love of funny.
Now I just have to get my own characters filmed, which is probably a good reason for me to stop this post.
For those who are interested the details of the inquiry included…
Hello Mike –
We’re doing a nationwide search for sketch performers who write and perform their own characters. Maybe you might be interested but we’d love if you might share this email with sketch performer friends. We’d love for you to go on tape for us. We’ll be visiting various cities around the country in the coming weeks, and will use these tapes to decide who we can meet in person – since time will obviously be limited.
What we’d like:
A short intro of yourself, where you’re from, where you’ve performed sketch, what general types of characters you do, etc. And then you can give us 3 or 4 characters – just a taste (a minute or so) of each. The whole thing should be 5 minutes or less.
Please let us know if you have any questions – and thanks!
Downloadable files (along with a photo & resume) should be sent to the following address:
Universal TV Casting
I don’t want these guys to get spammed so if you are interested feel free to contact me directly. A side note, I spoke with their team on the phone and they are looking for something within a week so if you are reading this post months from now the Denver search is over. But I’ll post any other great opportunities I hear.
Pictured above Denver Actress Nicole Campbell. Look for her on the stage currently in Boeing Boeing and in the upcoming Urban Brain web series for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Colorado and the annual web comedy for GetScared.com.
Pictured Below Denver Actress Khumbo Mhone and Denver Actor Kevin Jurado. Very shortly you will be able to call Khumbo and Kevin New York Actors. Get ready Big Apple, you have a couple wonderful and talented folks coming your way. Treat them well!
All three were students of the University Denver Theatre program (and my Comedy Writing THEA 3700 class).
